Report: Ex Celtic boss Neil Lennon being considered for UK return

Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon is being considered for a return to the UK with Charlton, according to Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

Nixon states that Lennon is on the League One club’s shortlist to replace the sacked Johnnie Jackson. However, it’s unclear whether he would be interested or whether he’ll be the club’s number one choice.

Lennon has only been out of the country since March when he joined Cypriot First Division outfit Omonia Nicosia. So far, the ex-Celtic boss has bigged up his time there as he looks to make them title contenders once again.

During a recent interview with PLZ Soccer, Lennon spoke about trying to follow in Ange Postecoglou’s footsteps by making his mark abroad. However, whether he would want another crack in England is up for debate.

Lennon has already had a spell down south with Bolton Wanderers back in their Championship days. After avoiding relegation in 2015, he left a year later amid financial woes with the club.

Lennon was sacked by Celtic back in February 2021 after our failed 10-in-a-row pursuit.

Neil Lennon as well avoiding another potential disaster in England

Charlton sit 13th in League One and will be expecting to compete for promotion next season. Another failure down south, however, would do perhaps irreparable damage to Lennon’s reputation.

He does seem a lot more settled in Cyprus and is clearly enjoying his work once again. You can’t see him moving from there so suddenly. Not when you consider they were the only club to put their trust in him when he was struggling to find a new gig.

Lennon’s reputation was at rock bottom after his Celtic departure. You could even question whether he would’ve taken the Omonia job had a club in the UK came calling for him.

There is still an element of intrigue regarding how he fares in Cyprus. Even considering what happened last season, you can’t deny it’ll be fascinating to see if he manages to restore them to their previous title-winning glory.

If Lennon really is set to take a leaf out of Ange’s book, he’s as well staying exactly where he is. Charlton doesn’t look like the right fit at all for him at the present moment.
