Former Celtic full-back Jeremie Frimpong is reportedly on a five-man shortlist of potential transfer targets for European giants Barcelona.

The 21-year-old has had an incredible football journey over the last few years, which was kick-started after joining Celtic in 2019.

Frimpong was picked up in the summer window by ex-boss Neil Lennon from the Manchester City academy, where he was making regular appearances for the club’s youth sides.

However, the right-back quickly made an impact on the Celtic first team, becoming Lennon’s first choice in the side, despite having two more senior options ahead of him at the beginning of the campaign.

The Netherlands under-21 internationalist’s skillset included frightening pace, and he became a fan’s favourite at Celtic Park due to his infectious personality.

But, after an impressive first 18 months at the club, Frimpong was already being eyed up for moves across Europe, and in the 2021 January window, he completed a move to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.

In Germany, he has continued his improvement, and last season made a return to Parkhead after his current side was drawn in the same Europa League group as Ange Postecoglou’s new-look team.

Reports in Spain have suggested that the rapid full-back could be on the move once again after just 18 months, as Barcelona eyes up a potential transfer for Frimpong.

According to journalist @gerardromero, Frimpong is part of a five-man shortlist of options that the La Liga side could look to bring to the club during the final few weeks of the window.

Not only would this likely earn Bayer Leverkusen a decent transfer fee after just over a year of the full-back being at the club, but Celtic would also be in line to benefit.

The Daily Record has stated that the Bhoys would pick up a percentage of the fee after including a ‘cast-iron’ sell-on fee in the deal, similar to ones agreed during Moussa Dembele and Kieran Tierney’s exit from the club.

Although it has not been revealed exactly how much the Hoops would be due to earn from any deal, it would showcase an excellent piece of business conducted in 2019, signing Frimpong for just £350,000.

It remains to be seen whether Frimpong will be the one option of the five that Barcelona will pursue this window. However, with the Spanish side previously taking interest in the full-back, it could suggest he is a player they have been watching for some time now.
