Former Celtic youngster Leo Mazis has made the move back home to Australia after struggling to settle in Europe, the World Game reports.

The Australian news outlet has said that the midfielder is now back in his homeland and on trial with A-League outfit Western Sydney Wanderers.

Mazis signed for Celtic back in February 2018 when Brendan Rodgers was in charge. With Tom Rogic flying at the time, there was plenty of excitement surrounding his arrival given his Aussie team-mate’s iconic status in Glasgow.

However, fast forward two years and Mazis left the Hoops without ever coming close to making a senior appearance. In fact, the attacking-midfielder left having never actually made a match-day squad.

He published a thankful message to Celtic on his Instagram after he bagged a move to Serie C side Triestina.

But things didn’t settle for him in Italy either. Just weeks after joining his new club, Mazis was on the move again as he departed the country for “personal reasons” (Tuttomercatoweb).

Home comforts could be what’s needed

Yet it’s been eight months in which you could describe Mazis as being in the wilderness a tad. He seemed determined to make it in Europe, so after originally coming from his homeland to try and make it in Scotland, it’s disappointing to see him back there once again.

It feels like a step back moving to Western Sydney Wanderers, but it’s evidently a necessary one. Mazis simply hasn’t been able to build up his reputation in Europe, and getting back into his comfort zone could be what he needs to kick-start his career again.

The World Game believes that his time in Italy was sent “into a spin” by the Covid crisis, and they’ve also reported that a decision has yet to have been made on the youngster’s future despite him having trained in Sydney for seven days.

Hopefully, he can find his groove back home after a tough time in the football hotbed of Europe. Considering he’s only 20 years of age, there’s plenty of time yet for him to make his mark here.

All the best to him as he looks to finally get his senior career going.

In other news, a Celtic pair are reportedly having to quarantine back in Scotland after a week from hell.
