Report: Sheffield United’s George Baldock still keen on talking to Celtic

George Baldock is reportedly still keen on talking to Celtic, despite a transfer now looking unlikely.

According to the Scottish Sun, the right-back still wants to have talks with the Scottish champions. That’s despite the fact United were promoted to the Premier League last season.

The only problem for Celtic is the stance that United and manager Chris Wilder have on the matter. The Blades are apparently happy to lose him for nothing next summer. Wilder is apparently desperate to keep him, meaning the fact he’s into the final year of his deal could now be irrelevant.

Neil Lennon identified Baldock as one of his top targets, according to the Scottish Sun. But the longer time goes on without the Hoops having made a move, the less likely it seems.

An official approach from Celtic hasn’t been reported as of yet. Whether the club are aware of United’s stance and perhaps feel it best to move on is unclear.

Baldock represents the right type of ambition

It would be extremely ideal if Celtic slapped a fair few million on the table for United to consider. After all, Baldock represents exactly what we need in the right-back position. He also represents the right level of ambition that we should have.

He’s featured on 65 occasions for Sheffield and has never played in the Premier League before. Therefore, the fact he still has a reported desire to speak to Celtic despite promotion shows he has the right attitude.

It was only really the second half of last season where Baldock found some consistency, however. He failed to feature in 15 of Sheffield’s opening 19 league games of last term. But, after finding his way into the side, he played 23 of the final 27 matches of the Championship campaign too.

Baldock has proven to be an aggressive, forward-thinking right-back. He consistently looks to bomb forward and provide support for the wingers. Neil Lennon loves his full-backs to be advanced, and Baldock seems like the kind of player who would suit his style to the ground.

At the moment, however, a deal looks a long way away. It would be great to see Celtic splash some cash to try and solve this glaring right-back issue. But any move for Baldock doesn’t appear to be inevitable as it stands. Hopefully, the club haven’t been put off by United’s stance.
