Celtic fans should reportedly forget about sealing a deal for Jose Mourinho to become the manager in the summer.

According to the Daily Record, high-ranking officials within Parkhead have dismissed a report claiming that Mourinho had been offered a contract to become the new Celtic manager this summer.

Sky Italia reported earlier on today that an offer had been made. Mourinho has been out of work since leaving Manchester United earlier on this season.

He’s arguably the most successful manager currently in world football. Despite that, his stock has slumped massively after the nature of his departures from Chelsea and Man Utd respectively.

The report from Sky Italia claimed that Mourinho and Peter Lawwell have a “close relationship”. Apparently, Mourinho wasn’t going to dismiss an approach from Celtic, despite wanting the PSG job.

Whilst that hasn’t been dismissed, any notion of a deal being offered reportedly has been.

Was it even believable in the first place?

Any offer for Mourinho would’ve been incredibly ambitious. But it also would’ve been one heck of a risk from Celtic too.

After all, the “Special One” hasn’t had the same swagger over the last few years as he had earlier in his career. Over the last three years, he’s managed just one solitary EFL Cup when it comes to domestic trophies. He did, of course, take Man Utd to the 2016-17 Europa League title.

Mourinho has always been one to have his eye on the powerhouse jobs of European football. To work at Celtic with a massive decline in budget compared to what he’s used to would’ve been unusual to say the least. So it’s no surprise to see the idea of it dismissed.

It’s just yet another crazy sub-plot to the story of Celtic’s managerial chase. For now, it’s still difficult to see past the Celtic board appointing Neil Lennon.

But there’ll be many more names to be linked with the job between now and the end of our search. Perhaps none as crazy as this suggestion though.
