Liam Burt has been invited for a trial with League One club Sunderland after departing Celtic this summer, according to the Glasgow Times.
The midfielder has been spending time training with Barnsley, and even appeared for them several times in pre-season. Burt has made an impression too with three goals in three games, but the Tykes have yet to make a decision on his future.
The Glasgow Times believes that Barnsley remain interested in the midfielder, but that Sunderland have been keen on him for some time.

Burt has accepted the trial according to the newspaper, as he looks to bag a fine move after leaving Parkhead without making any appearances.
He opened up on his Celtic exit late last month, and explained how he believed manager Neil Lennon was a fan of his. Speaking to the Glasgow Times, he said: “I think the manager did like me and he praised me a few times. I knuckled down but it was going to be hard and it proved that. It’s completely understandable that I didn’t play with 10 in a row and so much at stake.”
Simply too much competition to give Burt a shot
Burt’s issue was the players ahead of them and the quantity of the competition too.
He wasn’t only competing with the likes of Scott Brown, Callum McGregor, and Olivier Ntcham. He also had to contend with the likes of Ismaila Soro, Nir Bitton, Luca Connell, Cameron Harper, and Kerr McInroy too. That’s not even including the signing of David Turnbull this summer.
Celtic’s midfield is absolutely brimming with talent at the minute. Sitting in the reserves for another season wouldn’t have been worthwhile for a player who is now 21 and needs to be playing regularly.

The former Rangers and Celtic youngster will be hoping to make a success of it down in England’s lower leagues and start to work towards potentially being an English Premier League footballer. A switch to the likes of Sunderland or Barnsley would be a good start.
It certainly appears as though Burt has landed on his feet after his Parkhead rejection this summer. That’s great to see, as he’s always come across well and clearly has some talent.
Here’s hoping he can make an impression with whoever he signs for next.
In other news, Celtic’s new signing has already shown fantastic leadership off the pitch with these comments.
