Celtic manager Neil Lennon is set to leave his post within 24 hours.

That’s according to The Scottish Sun journalist David Friel, a former employee at Celtic TV [Sun]. The news came around 10.30pm on the 23rd, just as a documentary on the club was being aired on Al Jazeera.

In the report, Friel stated that John Kennedy was to take over Lennon’s responsibilities, with Gavin Strachan staying on as Kennedy’s assistant.

The timing is eerie, as Neil Lennon rejoined Celtic two years ago this month. However, sitting 18 points behind Rangers, a decision had to be made. As yet, we don’t know whether it was voluntary on Lennon’s part. Equally, it could’ve been Ian Bankier, Peter Lawwell and Dermot Desmond who made the call.

Celtic legends and supporters alike have reacted to the shock news. The shock being in the announcement’s timing, with nothing coming from the club itself.

Many supporters have been critical of how the news broke, with The Scottish Sun hardly popular around Kerrydale Street. An official announcement from the club is likely to emerge in the morning of the 24th.

Chris Sutton was one of the first to offer his condolences to Lennon, but stated that the manager “had to go”.

Fans, of course, had a lot to say about the news.
