A report from the Herald has provided Celtic’s valuation of centre-back Kristoffer Ajer.

The Scottish Sun reported last night at the Norwegian was the subject of interest from Norwich City. It had been claimed that the EPL new boys were willing to splash out around £8m for his services.

However, the Herald has claimeed that the Hoops want as much as £12m for their centre-back. Ajer is out of contract at the end of next season, meaning his value has decreased sizably since last summer.

The Herald also reports that Norwich could be put off by Celtic’s valuation. It would be a clear sign that the Championship winners were only looking for a bargain, albeit signing Ajer for £12m is still an incredible deal.

What is clear is that Ajer is highly likely to leave this summer. Hopefully, however, Celtic can ensure that they bag exactly what he’s worth for his services.

£12m and any buyer would still be getting an incredible deal for Kris Ajer

Even at £12m, someone is getting an incredible deal here. Considering the inflation of the football transfer markets across European football, Ajer should be an expensive commodity.

It’s also easy to forget that Kris was interesting AC Milan back in the summer window too. That’s something Milan boss Stefano Pioli even confirmed himself back in October [Scottish Sun].

The truth is that whoever signs Ajer will be bagging a player with outrageous levels of potential. A player who will be playing at the top end of European football in the long-term. So even at £12m, someone is getting a bargain.

Yes, there are troubling aspects of Ajer’s game that need driven out of him. There can be a tendency to get a touch too careless in the box and he undoubtedly commits too many needless fouls. But there are a lot more positives to his game than negatives.

It’s easy to forget, but Ajer is only 23. The responsibility he’s taken on at Celtic has been incredible over the last few years. If he was staying for next season, and chances are there are next to chance that’ll be the case, he would easily have been a candidate to be our next captain.

Instead, however, someone is going to get a major bargain when they pick him up. Especially at such a modest fee of £12m.

In other news, we take a look at how much Celtic would have to pay to sign Mario Vuskovic.
