Celtic would likely accept a fee in the range of £15m to £20m for Odsonne Edouard, according to the Telegraph.
The report claims that Arsenal have not given up hope of signing the Frenchman this summer. However, they also claim that Leicester City remain the favourites to bag him.
Edouard will be into the final 12 months of his contract, thus lessening his true worth. Combine that with the fact he’s been off it for much of the season and it’s no wonder the Hoops won’t be getting his peak valuation.
The Telegraph reports that Arsenal would hope to get Edouard’s valuation via the sale of Alexandre Lacazette. That is if they decide not to extend his contract.
The newspaper also says that Arsenal’s spending power will be dependent on where they finish this season. The top four is now out of reach for them, with their only route to the Champions League accessible via winning this season’s Europa League.
£15m to £20m for Celtic star Edouard? That’s the risk we took last summer
This most definitely isn’t Edouard’s full valuation. A player of his quality should be going for a lot more than the figures mentioned. But unfortunately, this is the risk we took last summer.
We knew by holding onto our top talents that we wouldn’t get the same joy when it came to seeling them this year. We were simply happy to accept that though as long as 10-in-a-row was secured. As we know, it’s backfired horribly.
So now we’re left having to sell some top stars on cut-price deals given their contracts. And it looks as though we can forget about any sort of extensions for the likes of Edouard and Kris Ajer too. There’s no reason for them to feel like their future is at Parkhead these days. Not when they have clubs around Europe’s top leagues after them.
But at the same time, it’s important that we concentrate on the positives. There are plenty of deals Celtic could do with around £15m. That covers a good part of the rebuild we need this summer. Albeit, not all transfer funds will go directly into the new manager’s summer budget.
As for where Edouard will go – it’s anyone’s guess. He could be off to Arsenal, Leicester City, or another league entirely. That will hardly be at the forefront of the Celtic fans’ concerns at the end of the season.
In any case, hopefully we can squeeze as much out of any interested suitors as possible. But we’ll certainly have to accept the fact we won’t be getting Odsonne’s full valuation.
