Report: Peter Lawwell and Celtic stance on European Super League

Peter Lawwell and Celtic are strongly opposed to the breakaway European Super League announced by major clubs on Sunday night.

Sky Sports report the stance in an article looking at how the whole affair could impact Celtic and Rangers going forward.

Journalist Charles Paterson also reports that Lawwell was part of the emergency European Club Association call last night, as news of the proposed plans broke.

As we’ve noted on 67 Hail Hail previously, the Celtic chief sits on the ECA board and a variety of UEFA competition committees.

However, until this point, we had no real indication of what he was thinking about the whole drama.

Pundit Andy Walker had claimed this morning that Celtic and Rangers would jump at the chance to be involved in any ESL tournament.

Clearly, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Celtic, like many clubs, will be anxious about precarious European Super League situation

Lawwell, incoming CEO Dom McKay and the Celtic board will no doubt be staying abreast of all developments on this situation.

Not only is the endeavour potentially money-spinning in its own right, it could severely impact qualification and TV rights for the Champions League and Europa League tournaments, which the Bhoys currently compete in regularly.

The breakaway 12 are acting selfishly and greedily, risking leaving the rest of European football behind.

Hopefully the rest of football can unite and block the proposals.
