Celtic could reportedly be set for a bidding war over their midfielder Olivier Ntcham.
According to the Daily Record, old suitors Porto are back in for the Frenchman. They apparently sent a scout to watch France under-21s take on Belgium on Monday night. Ntcham only played for the final 15 minutes, but Porto are still apparently convinced on him.
This comes after previous interest from Marseille. It was reported that their new manager, Andre Villas-Boas, has been watching Ntcham for over a year (Foot Mercato). The Record, however, believes that Ntcham would favour a move back to France as opposed to Portugal.
No bid has as of yet been reported. But with both Porto and Marseille well off financially, it could be good news for Celtic. Porto are apparently aware of Marseille’s interest in Ntcham too, according to the Record.
Ntcham featured 37 times for Celtic last season. Therefore, he isn’t exactly a bit-part player at Parkhead. But inconsistency has plagued his time in Glasgow over the last 12 months. He’s struggled to win his spot back off Callum McGregor or Scott Brown, and isn’t a first-choice anymore.
Celtic must get maximum value for his talent
Despite Ntcham’s struggles this season, however, it’s clear he has talent. His passing range in particular is perhaps unmatched by anyone at the club, so long as the Frenchman is on his game.
He has incredible technique. And therefore Celtic shouldn’t be too hasty when jumping at offers for him. Clubs will know just how good Ntcham truly is, and Celtic have to make sure they get the right fee for that talent.
Keeping him at Parkhead is starting to look less and less likely. Even with Ntcham’s new contract, the vultures are starting to circle around him, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he was keen on a move out of Glasgow.
Celtic are still overflowing in Ntcham’s position as it stands. Eboue Kouassi, Nir Bitton, and Yousouf Mulumbu are all available as back-up. You would hope, however, that Celtic dipped back into the transfer market for a replacement if Ntcham leaves.
In any case, watch the space on this one. This likely won’t be the last we’ve heard of this saga.
