Report: Rangers holding talks with potential Celtic target Joe Aribo

Rangers are reportedly holding talks with Celtic target Joe Aribo of Charlton Athletic.

The attacking midfielder has been interesting both sides of Glasgow this summer, but no formal offer had appeared to have been offered by either.

But according to the Scottish Daily Mail (June 6th, page 89), Steven Gerrard has opened talks with the midfielder. This comes after he was officially offered a new contract by Charlton too (Charlton Atheltic FC).

Aribo’s contract ran out at the end of the season. He’s effectively a free agent for any clubs interested, but it’s Rangers who are the first to have reportedly opened talks.

According to the Independent back in December, Aribo was favouring a move to the Bundesliga. He was apparently interesting Eintracht Frankfurt, and Germany was apparently where he was looking to go. But no further developments on German interest or talks have been reported.

Nothing to worry about from a Celtic perspective

Rangers may have taken a march in stepping up their interest in Aribo, but it’s nothing too serious for Celtic. If this was a player they are keen on bringing in, they would open discussions too. Celtic can do that at any point they wish.

What must be taken into account, however, is whether we need him. Is he better than what we currently have? Just because a player has a strong level of interest in him doesn’t mean he’s the real deal.

Celtic have also had since January to open discussions with the Charlton man. Of course, the managerial situation at Parkhead during the second half of the season could’ve had a bearing on that. But if Celtic want to move for him then they can do so very easily.

It now remains to be seen if Celtic are quite happy to let Rangers and others push ahead for Aribo. It’s arguable that we have other more pressing areas of the team that needs strengthening in any case.

It could, of course, still be the case that Aribo stays with Charlton too. He could easily decide that his future remains at the Valley after promotion to the Championship.

But with Rangers reportedly opening up talks, it now remains to be seen if Celtic or anyone else makes a move.
