The Scottish Sun has reported that one of the major reasons Celtic kept Neil Lennon in a job yesterday is because of the lack of alternative options available.
Lennon looked set to be sacked after a dreadful 2-0 home defeat to Ross County that saw us knocked out of the Betfred Cup on Sunday. The manager has now gone on a run of only two wins in 10 games, with the roof caving in on him at Parkhead.
Yet despite the fact the club is clearly in need of a fresh change, Lennon managed to stay in his role after crunch talks yesterday, the Sun states. And they believe that the club isn’t overly-enthused by the options out there at the moment.
Instead, Lennon appears to be getting extra time to try and turn things around at Parkhead, despite there being no evidence that this incredible slump in form is going to turn around.
Celtic remain 11 points behind Rangers in the Scottish Premiership and have already been knocked out of three different competitions this season alone.
A dreadful excuse that isn’t acceptable
You simply can’t use a lack of potential candidates as an excuse. Celtic should have a more than capable team who should be able to look all over Europe for their next man.
Are you honestly telling me that the best man for the job is one who has us on our worst run of form for a decade? Someone who has allowed us to slip out of Europe twice and drop a ridiculous level of points behind Rangers in the league?
Listen, Lennon’s achievements here will always be remembered, but there comes a point when you have to say enough is enough. How on earth the Celtic board reached the decision they did yesterday is absolutely anyone’s guess.
Eddie Howe, Dan Petrescu, Marco Silva, Ralf Rangnick. How on earth do those options not read better to the board than Neil Lennon at the minute? What about that big list of CVs Peter Lawwell refused to look at when the job was up for grabs the last time? Dig them out.
It’s just not good enough from the club’s hierarchy, and for now, we’ve decided to put the season at serious risk ahead of what’s going to be a massively crucial period for the club.
Lennon now has some extremely winnable league fixtures coming up, but given the defeat to County at the weekend, there’s no guarantee we’ll come out of them all with maximum points.
