Report: The fee Celtic must pay to land Croatian defender Mario Vuskovic

Celtic could bag Croatian under-21 international Mario Vuskovic for a price of €6million [£5.2m], according to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb.

Reliable Italian journalist Nicolo Schira reported last week that Celtic had seen a bid of €5m rejected [£4.3m]. This was then followed by the Hajduk Split president claiming that they will look at Vuskovic’s future at the end of the season.

However, it looks as though Celtic are only around £900k off what Split are actually asking for. Without a new manager, of course, it’s difficult to say whether Celtic would be willing to splash out such a hefty amount.

Tuttomercatoweb, meanwhile, believes there is plenty of interest from Italy in the player. They state that Sassuolo, Torino, and Napoli are all keeping tabs on him.

But the source also claims that Hajduk Split would want a percentage of any future sale when the player moves on again.

Celtic need to spend big on their back-line – Mario Vuskovic an interesting option

Everything about Vuskovic screams potential. He hasn’t had an electric career so far, but it’s in its very early stages. At only 19, he’s managed to make 38 senior appearances for Hajduk. He’s also experienced Europa League football too – something Celtic have grown accustomed to in recent years.

Most impressively, however, is the fact that Vuskovic has managed to play for Croatia at under-17, under-19, and under-21 level. He’s made five appearances with the u-21s, making his debut only last November.

He’ll be part of the u-21 European Championship knockout stages this summer with the Croats too. There, his side is scheduled to face off against Spain in the last-eight. Watching that one next month could give Celtic fans a glimpse of what he’s all about.

But regardless of who we bring in, money has to be spent. Celtic can’t be put off just because he would cost over £5m. If ever there was a summer to really speculate to accumulate, it’s this one. Just because we’re having a major rebuild doesn’t mean we should be looking to do it on the cheap.

Celtic will have cash to burn and gaps to fill this summer. Kris Ajer looks likely to depart given he’s into the final 12 months of his contract. Shane Duffy will head back to Brighton, whilst Chris Jullien is suffering from a long-term injury.

If Celtic can nab Vuskovic for £5.2m? We’d be crazy not to take a further look.

In other news, the Celtic have been left concerned by a Tuesday evening report.
