Two Scottish clubs are said to be interested in taking Motherwell’s Celtic-linked centre-back Declan Gallagher, according to the Herald.
The report states that the Tannadice outfit are looking to prize Gallagher away from Fir Park by making him one of their highest-paid players. The Herald reports that Aberdeen are the other Premiership side keen on a move.
Gallagher’s contract is up at the end of the season, but he’s now just several Motherwell appearances away from triggering a one-year extension. The Herald reports that United are eyeing up a pre-contract deal. However, they would also be open to doing something in January.
The report also claims that there is genuine interest from the English Championship in Gallagher too. This comes from both QPR and Cardiff City respectively.
However, if a report in the Daily Record at the start of the month is to be believed, he wants a move to Celtic. The Hoops are Gallagher’s boyhood club, and plenty of fans have already debated whether he would be good enough.
Scottish clubs will be attracted to Gallagher, but he’s there for Celtic if they want him
Celtic won’t be fearful of any competition for the Motherwell man. They have a host of things going their way over rival Scottish clubs at the moment.
Indeed, it may be all doom and gloom on the park this season, but Celtic remains hugely attractive for Scottish-based players in particular. For the likes of Gallagher, Celtic will be his utopia as he gets ready to turn 30 next month.
The main question is whether Celtic will even be interested in him. We spoke yesterday about how well he played against Rangers at Fir Park. However, whether his style would suit Celtic is another question.
The fee needed to sign him shouldn’t put us off. If Neil Lennon wants him and the board continues to stand by him, a price for his services wouldn’t be a problem. Especially considering his contract is up at the end of the season. Even if he triggers an extension, it shouldn’t matter.
But there wouldn’t be an overwhelming delight amongst the support if this is the height of Celtic’s January ambitions. Going from the likes of Mark McKenzie and Filip Benkovic to Declan Gallagher is still a fair drop in terms of quality.
However, the Motherwell man won’t wait on Celtic forever. We’ll need to make a decision on this one soon with plenty of other clubs seemingly circling.
