Leigh Griffiths is expected to stay at Dundee for the rest of the season as opposed to returning to Celtic, according to the Scotsman.

It was reported yesterday that the Dens Park club were considering triggering a clause in his loan deal that could see him return to Parkhead [Scottish Sun]. This comes after the Celtic-owned talent has only bagged 2 goals as we reach the midway point of the season.

The Scotsman, however, believes he’s likely to stay where he is despite the speculation. It’s reported that a meeting is due to take place between Dundee manager James McPake and the higher-ups.

The report states that the Premiership club are expected to make their decision over the next few days.

Interestingly, the Scotsman also says that Dundee have told fellow frontman Jason Cummings that he can look for a new club. With Cillian Sheridan also out with a long-term injury, it could be naive of Dundee to let Griffiths leave so soon.

The Scotland international netted a superb free-kick in Dundee’s last match against Aberdeen. But so far, his loan spell has been anything but profitable.

Leigh Griffiths can’t afford to return to Celtic

It’s quite simple – if Leigh Griffiths returns to Celtic Park at any point before the summer, it drastically reduces his options for next season.

It’s a shockingly poor look for him if his loan spell is cut short. Especially considering the striker issues Dundee currently have. In terms of quality, he’s better than that and that’s something he’ll know himself.

Should the decision be made to send him back now, what would the next 6 months hold for him? Celtic would likely desperately try to ship him out again, but who is going to take a punt on him?

It’s not as if the player has any sort of long-term future at Celtic Park. If he comes back, there’s no chance Ange Postecoglou reintegrates him into first-team action.

He needs to do all he can to make this second half of the season a majorly successful one. Only by doing that will he be able to reinvigorate his career somewhat. His next move is going to be crucial, with his Celtic contract up in the summer.

As things stand, there won’t be a queue of teams lining up for his services.
