It could well be all change when it comes to Celtic’s goalkeeping situation over the next season. What we know for sure is that Scott Bain will be at the club.
On Thursday the former Hoops number one signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2023. Aside from that though, it is uncertain which other goalkeepers will be at the club.
Craig Gordon seems set to leave as he is in the last season of his contract. Fraser Forster has come in and performed excellently for the Hoops – but his loan deal only runs until the end of the season.
Recently linked with goalkeeper
To make matters even more intriguing, the Hoops were recently linked with a move for £6 million rated AEK Athens goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas.
Now, a recent report from Sportime in Greece claim that AEK are willing to sell the player in January. That could leave Neil Lennon with a decision to make.
Will he still move for the player despite Bain’s new deal and Forster’s good form? The answer to that, is an emphatic ‘Yes’.
There is no guarantee that Forster will still be at Celtic Park next season. That is not what fans will want to hear, but it is true.
A recent report in the Daily Echo claimed that there was no ‘option to buy’ clause in Forster’s loan deal. That means that he will return to Southampton at the end of the season.
Hoops should not stop looking to improve squad
Therefore, the Hoops are doing the right thing in continuing to look for transfer targets. That is why if there is a chance that they can sign a player that they feel can improve the squad, they should take that chance.
In a year’s time, the goalkeeping situation at Celtic Park could look very different to how it looks now. If that improves the Celtic team, so be it.
