Reported Richard Hughes latest is a big boost for Celtic
Richard Hughes is now unlikely to make a move to Celtic this summer to team up with Eddie Howe, according to the Scottish Sun.
In recent weeks, Celtic fans have been made to believe this has been a potential deal-breaker for Howe. The Sun reported at the start of April that Howe’s demand for Hughes had complicated his talks with the Hoops.
However, in the newspaper’s latest report, they state that, should Hughes stay with Bournemouth, it wouldn’t lead to Howe cancelling talks with Celtic about a move north.
The source claims it would be a big blow to Howe should Celtic fail to get Hughes in the door. However, Fergal Harkin and John Kennedy are two of the other names in the frame, with Celtic wanting Howe to work closely with the latter.
And knowing that Hughes isn’t a necessity eradicates perhaps the biggest fear for Celtic fans in their club’s pursuit of Howe.
No Richard Hughes at Celtic would lead to a better structure
There was always something off about the potential manager choosing his own Director of Football. The idea of a DoF is for a club to be able to instill a culture and philosophy that goes above the manager’s remit. Come up with a long-term plan for the club that wouldn’t be thrown into chaos would the manager leave.
Therefore, it was never truly right that Howe decided his own boss effectively.
It would’ve been different if we’re talking a Head of Recruitment or the installation of a new scouting regime. You can see why Howe would have a major say in that regard. But when it comes to the actual DoF? It just doesn’t make a lot of sense.
And for Celtic fans this is huge. We were effectively made to believe that if Hughes wasn’t Parkhead-bound then chances are Howe wouldn’t have been either. Being able to appoint an alternative should hopefully lead to a smooth transition for Howe into the Celtic managerial hot-seat.
Of course, it’s still anybody’s guess as to who that new man is. Whether it’s Kennedy, Harkin, or David Webb [The Herald], all we know is we’re going to undergo a major overhaul at Celtic.
Thankfully, the appointment of a new manager doesn’t look as though it will be reliant on the new DoF.
