Celtic-bound Liam Scales to play for Shamrock Rovers tomorrow
Seemingly Celtic-bound Liam Scales will again be available to play for Shamrock Rovers in their Europa Conference League qualifier on Thursday night.
Scales has consistently been linked with a move to Celtic Park this summer. The latest being that a deal is more or less done as we wait on the official announcement of his arrival [Irish Mirror].
It looks like being a big month for Scales, who can play either as a left-back or centre-back. Yesterday, he was reported by the Irish Examiner to be in line for a maiden Republic of Ireland call-up.
However, his announcement as a new Celtic signing doesn’t appear to be happening in the coming days. Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley was asked about the player in the build-up to Thursday night’s game, and said the following via RTE:
“All I know is that we’re focused on Thursday and Liam is focused on Thursday and what will be after that is down to the club.”
No imminent announcement on Liam Scales to Celtic for now
This is starting to look like a deal that’s going to be dragged out until the end of the transfer window. Celtic won’t be signing Scales until at least after Thursday night’s UECL game between Shamrock and Flora Tallinn.
Of course, Scales couldn’t have played for Celtic against AZ Alkmaar in any case. Given he wasn’t signed in time to make the squad submitted to UEFA, there’s clearly been no rush to get the deal over the line.
But this is looking like our only competition for Greg Taylor this season. The sooner we manage to get Scales in the door, the better for the football club as a whole.
Celtic will fortunately have a two-week break from competitive action after Sunday’s Glasgow derby against Rangers. However, Scales may be off with the Republic of Ireland during that period. Meaning he won’t have any time to get to know his teammates during the break.
So it would’ve been ideal for this one to have been wrapped up by now. But it looks as though Shamrock Rovers have been insistent on wanting him for their Euro qualifier.
Hopefully after Thursday night, we start to get some definitive news on what’s happening here. Scales has been Celtic-bound for over a week now. It’s time to bring him in.
