The reporting on what appeared to be the seemingly inevitable arrival of Riley McGree to Celtic has taken a huge u-turn over the last 12 hours.

Earlier this week, it was reported by the Daily Record that it was a done deal. That Celtic had agreed a fee of around £3m with Charlotte FC for the midfielder and that McGree himself had accepted the offer to come.

However, Football Scotland last night provided a different view of the situation out of seemingly nowhere. With Celtic fans just awaiting the news to be announced, it was claimed by Football Scotland that talks had broken down late on.

It has been claimed that Middlesbrough are now interested in the player. Yet it hasn’t been reported as to what the reason is said to be for the breakdown with Celtic and McGree.

It’s a far cry from where Celtic fans believed the deal to be at only days ago. All eyes will now be on what happens over the next several days.

McGree has just finalised a loan spell with Birmingham in which he bolstered his reputation amongst Championship clubs.

Celtic fans left wondering where Riley McGree saga will head next

The whole situation now becomes a total mess for the Celtic supporters. We’re left wondering exactly where the saga will head next and whether the player will even become a Celtic player in the near future.

This was said to be all but finalised. McGree was supposed to have signed a deal with Ange Postecoglou ready to reunite with his former Australia midfielder.

It’s a touch bizarre that there has been no specific reason given for the breakdown in negotiations. What could possibly have happened at the 11th hour that has made this go south?

It will be interesting to see if other clubs now step up their pursuit of McGree. These are the kinds of updates that could spur fresh competition for the player’s signature.

It could simply be the case that he believes he has a more lucrative offer elsewhere. Perhaps he has a notion of staying in England and progressing there. We simply don’t know what has happened here and can only speculate.

And it’s all we can continue to do until an official announcement is finally made here. But this certainly isn’t the update Celtic supporters were expecting or hoping for.
