Respected journalist Stephen McGowan says that Celtic could sign a midfielder before Monday’s transfer window deadline.

The Hoops are widely expected to complete the signing of Kilmarnock left-back Greg Taylor. The Scotland international, 21, has already undergone a medical according to Sky Sports News and should be signed on Monday evening.

And Taylor may not be the only Deadline Day addition at Celtic. Daily Mail journalist McGowan, who’s understood to have reliable Celtic contacts, reckons the club are looking at bringing in a midfielder.

In response to a tweet from a Hoops fan enquiring about incomings, he said: “Taylor tomorrow probably. Maybe a midfielder.”

McGowan’s tweet will add further intrigue to an exciting looking Deadline Day for the Hoops. Many supporters will wonder if the midfielder in question is Spurs man Victor Wanyama.

The big Kenyan is said to be a target for Celtic (Daily Record) although those rumours may have been put to bed by a tweet from STV man Ronnie Charters.

With no other midfielders really being mentioned with regards to Celtic, you really do wonder who McGowan was referring to.

Do Celtic need another midfielder?

Neil Lennon’s side look in much better nick than a fortnight ago. That’s what winning does for you. However, some Celtic fans may still feel that the team could do with another addition in the middle of the park.

Scott Brown may have put an imperious display in during the win at Ibrox, but he has still had a mixed start to the season. At the age of 34 he is getting no younger and should be gradually lowering the amount of games he plays per season.

The club captain has played over 50 matches in each of his last three seasons but you get the impression he should be used more sparingly this time around. Brown will be at his best when he’s fresh and can give his all on the big occasions.

If he’s not playing some run of the mill matches then Olivier Ntcham could step in. But after that we are a little bit short. Nir Bitton is somehow viewed as more of a central-defender nowadays and Luca Connell is yet to be seen in a Celtic shirt – competitively at least.

Added to that, Eboue Kouassi doesn’t seem to have much of a chance of starting games. That means that we could probably do with one more midfielder to take the strain off Callum McGregor – another player who shouldn’t repeat his heroic numbers of last season.
