Richard Hughes' scouting bigged up by Harry Redknapp ahead of reported Celtic move
Harry Redknapp has described talented scout Richard Hughes as a “massive Celtic man” ahead of his reported move to Parkhead.
The Daily Record reported on Monday night that Hughes was on his way to Celtic to become Eddie Howe’s chief scout. An official announcement has yet to be made on the new manager or any of his staff. However, the relationship between Howe and Hughes makes this partnership a no-brainer.
Hughes had been Howe’s chief scout at the Cherries as they shot up and solidified themselves as a Premier League club. He continued to work with the now-Championship club as a technical director after Howe departed.
But as he potentially prepares for his big Celtic step, he’s been given a glowing review by iconic English manager Harry Redknapp.
“Huge part of Eddie’s team”
As quoted by the Daily Record, Redknapp said: “Richard’s knowledge of players is excellent, not just in Britain but across the world. He speaks fluent Italian, he’s a great lad and he’s going to be very important to Eddie as he looks to bring success to Celtic and in the work which needs to be done. I have no doubt they will rise to the challenge, Richard is like Eddie in that it’s just football, football, football with them. There’s nothing much other than family and football and then walking the dog.
“Eddie relies on him with the recruitment and it’s that bond and trust they have in one another which is so important. Richard’s an interesting character, he has a cosmopolitan side to him and if you talk to him about any player from any part of the world, he seems to know almost everyone.
“He will give you chapter and verse on players I don’t know well. It’s that depth of knowledge and study which he puts into recruitment which makes him so valuable. He would be the perfect man at the perfect time for Celtic given the overhaul which will need to start this summer with so many players leaving and the rebuild which is about to take place.
“Richard is a massive Celtic man and if he comes then he’ll be a huge part of Eddie’s team and plans for what lies ahead.”
Richard Hughes to Celtic looks like just the appointment needed to get cracking with the rebuild
Howe and Hughes were constantly having to rebuild and rejig Bournemouth during their time together. Having to totally overhaul a playing squad isn’t something that should be alien to Hughes in particular.
He’s going to have perhaps the busiest summer of his career should he come to Parkhead of course. Celtic could need a figure well into double digits when it comes to incomings this year. It’ll be absolutely vital that the vast majority of them are major success stories too.
That’s why this rebuild is deemed so difficult. It’s not just the number of players we need to sign, it’s how many NEED to shine for Howe to have a successful season. We aren’t signing players this summer for cover. There’s a good eight or nine who need to come in and be first-choice.
The largest number of players Howe brought in at the Cherries was as many as 12 in the summer of 2015. With five being free transfers and three loan deals thrown into the mix, bringing in players for little money was no problem for them either.
So the scale of the rebuild certainly won’t frighten him. It’s nothing he haven’t dealt with as a team before, granted the pressure is heightened on them tenfold. With his trusted confidant by his side, it should be an exciting summer for Celtic fans.
It’ll be interesting to see what work goes on behind the scenes in the coming weeks. But the Hoops certainly appear to be making important moves.
In other news, Eddie Howe has reportedly held talks with a former Celtic coach regarding a class Parkhead return.
