Ange Postecoglou is excited to be working with Reo Hatate at Celtic, having been an admirer of his for a number of years now.

The Bhoys boss has given an interview to club outlet Celtic TV, talking about a number of issues including his new signings, injuries and further January business.

One player he of course mentioned was Reo Hatate. He’s joined from Kawasaki Frontale on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

There’s been plenty of chat about his versatility and where he will play at the Bhoys. However, Postecoglou has confirmed he sees the player as an attacking midfielder.

Speaking to Celtic TV, he said: “He’s a player who I watched developed while in Japan. Kawasaki Frontale are a fantastic team. They’ve been an outstanding team for the last five years. They’ve got some ridiculous talent in their ranks and Reo is definitely one of them. You could see that from the moment he stepped into their first team.

“He’s had a lot of success. He’s played at a club that demands success and wants to win every week, which will sound familiar to those who follow Celtic. He has the right character and temperament.

“In terms of position, he’s a midfielder. He’s an attacking midfielder. He’s one I think will develop over time. He’s only had two years of senior football after the university system. He has a lot of upsides. I’m excited to start work with him.”

Hatate is likely to come into the team immediately and fill in for the injured David Turnbull, playing alongside Tom Rogic. He can be the link between defence and attack given his quickness of thought and passing vision.

Hopefully, we get a quick debut and get him up to speed quickly. Of all three signings made from Japan this month, Hatate may be the one with the most potential at Celtic.
