Celtic captain Callum McGregor has been voted the best player in Scotland for the 2021 calendar year after exceptional performances for club and country.
Daily Record writers have voted on a poll to put together the top 50 players currently plying their trade in the Scottish Premiership with McGregor topping the list.
Kyogo Furuhashi and Jota are also new entries in the top ten, with Joe Hart taking a place at 17.
However, it’s McGregor who grabs top spot, with the paper’s justification being: “McGregor can pick a pass and can score outstanding goals. Drop him further back on the pitch and his touch and intelligence shimmer. Combined with the quality is a fabulous engine. His numbers will be among the highest every week on the data trackers’ results
“Just as important is the fact he’s almost always there to do it. His appearance record over the past half decade is incredible. Three seasons ago he played more minutes than anyone across the globe. With a cupboard full of medals, an insatiable drive to work for more and the talent to back it up, he’ll go down as a Celtic great – if he’s not already there.”
The Celtic captain has been particularly impressive at the start of the 2021/22 season. Taking on new responsibilities in the squad, the Scotland international has excelled under Ange Postecoglou.

Callum McGregor’s Celtic quality is winding up Rangers fans
As noted in the Record write up, whether deployed in a more advanced position or as a deep-lying ‘number six’, McGregor is imperious and very rarely lets Celtic down.
As Postecoglou further optimises his team and squad in the January transfer window, there is little doubt that McGregor will continue to play an integral role. In fact, the smart money is on him getting even better.
Amusingly, this list has wound up many Rangers fans on social media today as they can’t contemplate why a Celtic player would be considered better than any of theirs.
But the reality is most people who have watched the Scottish Premiership this year know that McGregor stands out head and shoulders above the competition.

I think someone at The Record needs to be told a calendar year lasts for 12 months rather than four and a half… https://t.co/VD7qicS04y
