Rivals speak out on broken glass incident against Celtic

Rangers SLO has announced that the club is working with Police Scotland to identify the perpetrator of the broken glass incident against Celtic.

Joe Hart had to alert Willie Collum before the second half began regarding broken glass surrounding his penalty area. The shocking scenes led to a delay as Rangers groundstaff were called on to remove all of the shards.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has today hit out at the “thuggish behaviour” of those involved [LBC]. And now, Rangers’ SLO has broken his own club’s silence on the matter via Twitter:

The broken glass wasn’t the only incident that involved missiles being thrown onto the pitch of course. Jota also had what appeared to be a cup and a coin thrown his way as he took a second-half corner.

Not to mention the fact that Celtic players also had to dodge missiles at full-time as they tried to celebrate with the 700 away fans in the corner.

The Hoops secured a 2-1 win on the day courtesy of goals from Tom Rogic and Cameron Carter-Vickers.

There’s absolutely no excuse for this kind of behaviour. It doesn’t matter what football club you support. Any throwing of objects onto the park has to be taken to task.

It’s absolutely incredible that in 2022 a Celtic player is having to avoid a broken bottle being thrown at him. We all know how this could’ve ended on another day. Just because nobody was hurt doesn’t mean that no damage was done.

But as mentioned above, it wasn’t the only incident of Rangers fans throwing objects at Celtic players yesterday. It’s out of order and totally endangers player safety.

It’s important that this kind of incident is highlighted regardless of the result. It’s got nothing to do with football and never will. Players need to be made to feel safe when they’re effectively doing their jobs.

It’s positive to see Rangers communicating with the authorities. Hopefully, this is a matter that’s dealt with as swiftly as possible. The last thing the perpetrators deserve is the attention this brings.
