If Robbie Keane becomes Celtic manager next season, he will be without the services of Kasper Schmeichel.
Schmeichel has been out of action since February, after he could no longer cope with his shoulder issue and required surgery.
But following the conclusion of the season for Celtic over the weekend, Schmeichel has decided to retire from football at the age of 39.
When the news broke in Denmark on Wednesday morning, Schmeichel took to Instagram to address his followers, prompting Keane to chime in and praise the goalkeeper for a ‘great career.’
Name Celtic’s best and worst player this season…🤔🤨🍀
Robbie Keane reacts as Kasper Schmeichel retires because chances of playing again are ‘really small’
Schmeichel’s contract was coming to an end in June, and even if he decided to play again, it wouldn’t have been at Parkhead.
It could be argued that Celtic have already moved on with their goalkeeper, because Viljami Sinisalo has done very well, and will now be looking to maintain the gloves for next season.
Nonetheless, Schmeichel stated on social media that a shoulder injury is ‘forcing’ him to hang up his gloves, and it comes on the back of doctors telling him the chances of him playing again are very slim.
Either way, this was Keane’s message to Celtic’s now-retired keeper on IG: ‘Congrats on a great career mate, wish you all the best in the future ☘️.’
Keane needs to keep Viljami Sinisalo as Celtic’s number one
These Keane to Celtic rumours won’t go away. Many fans wouldn’t be surprised if Dermot Desmond turns to the former striker.
But if that does happen, then he needs to keep Sinisalo in between the sticks.
The Finnish international is starting to grow in his role. He needs a pre-season where he knows that he will be the main guy, and then let him run away with it from there.
