Celtic came close to signing Dinamo Bucharest winger Deian Sorescu in the summer, according to Romanian outlet Pro Sport.

The report claims that the Hoops had discussed a potential zoom call with the Romanian international to get to know the player a bit more. It’s stated that Celtic were close to making an offer for the player before everything fell apart.

Pro Sport believe a potential move fell through due to the arrival of Ange Postecoglou. They also state right-winger Sorescu was also close to landing a move to Legia Warsaw before that fell through.

It’s also claimed that Bucaresti were intent on not selling the player over the course of the summer. The player has since had a falling out with his manager as his future in Romania looks bleak.

In the end, Celtic signed Liel Abada in an early-summer move from Postecoglou.

Sorescu, meanwhile, has started the season with 6 goals in 12 appearances. He can also play on the left flank, central midfield, and right-back too with the player having proven his versatility.

Missing out on Deian Sorescu won’t have Celtic fans wondering what if

Sorescu is clearly a talent and one that Romania appear to rate well given his recent breakthrough into the national team over the summer. However, the 24-year-old hardly comes with a pedigree that makes you wonder whether we would’ve been better off moving for him.

In Romanian Liga 1, Sorescu has 18 goals in 90 appearances. It’s not a bad return, but it’s hardly a sublime goal return for a winger. He’s also managed 16 assists, but in a standard of league that also doesn’t exactly make you gush in awe of the quality he’s up against [Transfermarkt].

Celtic instead moved for Abada, and now look at the options that await us on the right flank. We also have James Forrest and Karamokon Dembele set to return from injury in the coming weeks. There’s depth there and that’s something that can’t be underestimated.

What is attractive about Sorescu is his versatility. He would’ve certainly been an ideal player to have around during our recent injury crisis. But is he a better talent than Abada? Is he a better right-back option than Josip Juranovic or a more exciting left-wing alternative to Jota?

The answer is no. So it’s hardly a move we’ll rue not making.

So long as Postecoglou was the one to break any potential interest in him, we’ll continue to back the manager’s decisions in the transfer market.
