Ronny Deila’s promise to Celtic fans back in 2014 was never realised, but the Norwegian has reportedly made the same bizarre move with New York City.

Back in Deila’s first season at Parkhead, he promised that he would strip down if we won the treble. It was something he later joked had him afraid to win it (Daily Record).

In the end, the former Stromsgodset boss managed to avoid the act at Parkhead. Celtic only won a double in his first season before we only took the league title back in 2015/16.

However, even so, that hasn’t stopped him from making the same promise to New York City fans. According to a fan, Deila told the Third Rail Supporters’ Club that he’ll strip down should the club win the MLS Cup next season.

Deila has only stripped down once on the pitch in the past. After keeping Stromsgodset in the Tippeligaen, the ex-Celtic man took off his clothes on the pitch in a wild celebratory move.

Deila may very well be stripping come the end of 2020

New York have as good a chance as anyone of taking the MLS Cup under Deila after a fine campaign last year. They’ve managed to hold onto their key players such as Maximiliano Moralez and Ismael Tajouri, which should stand them in good stead.

They also finished first in the Eastern Conference last season with a points total of 64 from 34 games. That’s seven points more than Atlanta United in second and eight points more than eventual winners Seattle Sounders in the Western.

Where New York crumbled last season was with their bottle in the playoffs. They surrendered home advantage in a weak 2-1 loss to Toronto FC. Deila’s goal will be to bring a winning mentality and some mental strength to the trophyless club.

Deila will be looking to do a first-ever in the club’s history by winning the competition. New York only played their first game in 2015, and since then haven’t managed to win the MLS Cup.

So it’s no wonder Deila is promising to strip if they win it. It’ll be a monumental achievement, and one you feel the Norwegian could do with given his rollercoaster time so far in football management.

We never managed to see it at Parkhead, but Deila certainly looks willing to continue with his bizarre promise wherever he goes.
