Former Celtic manager Ronny Deila has been announced as the new boss at MLS side New York City.

The Norwegian gaffer won two league titles and a league cup during his couple of season in Scotland. Deila went back home where he had won a league title a few years previous following his Hoops resignation.

He has remained in relative obscurity until recently when the New York move was reported. The 44-year-old is well prepared for his switch across the pond, partly in thanks to his Celtic stint.

Ronny Deila will easily adjust to New York City thanks to Celtic move

Deila is entering uncharted waters for him by crossing the Atlantic to MLS. This is a whole new environment – far from what he is used to.

However, Deila was able to cope for the most part when the same applied to his Celtic move in 2014. Deila isn’t going to America completely blind and can use his Glasgow experiences to help him settle in.

There is a familiar face in the ranks at new club

It isn’t all unknown for Deila when he heads to New York as there is one man there he knows very well. Former Hoops winger Gary Mackay-Steven is under contract with the light blues.

Deila signed the Scotsman from Dundee United while manager at Celtic and will know his strengths and weaknesses.

There is also a Scandinavian flavour to the team with Anton Tinnerholm and captain Alexander Ring in the side.

Pressure to win MLS titles from City owners

New York City will be aiming to go far in the MLS by appointing Deila as head coach. The City Group will be aiming to win the league and cup which will help the brand develop. Deila has plenty of experience of winning trophies going by his spells at Stromsgodset and Celtic.

He did the unthinkable by going from possible relegation to league title glory in Norway under pressure. Meanwhile, in Glasgow, he managed just about to keep a noisy Aberdeen side from causing an upset.

MLS will be no different and there will be a massive weight on his shoulders for the team to perform with a lot of investment put into it.

The New York City move is a sink or swim move for Deila who looks to keep rebuilding his own brand. If he is able to replicate his success at Celtic by winning a title, then he will do just swimmingly in the big apple.
