Ross County boss labels Celtic “the best team in the country” after big result
Ross County manager Malky Mackay has stated that Celtic are “the best team in the country” as they close in on Premiership success.
The Hoops managed to pick up a vital 3 points against the Staggies in Dingwall this afternoon. The 2-0 victory was their 4th win in 4 against County this year, and it’s fair to say it was a deserved result too.
Celtic are now just 2 victories away from the Premiership title. And even though Ange Postecoglou had to wait until the 87th-minute for the game to be wrapped up, it was a big test passed for the Bhoys.
Mackay, of course, has been looking at things from a County perspective. He talked up his side after the game but did leave some words of praise for Celtic on a big day for the league leaders. As quoted by the Press and Journal, Mackay said: “We were playing against a really good team, they are league leaders. They scored early on and they won 7-0 [against St Johnstone]. We made sure we stayed calm before half-time, because one can turn into two and three against Celtic.
“We stayed in the game until half-time and in the second half I asked us to be a bit more brave, in terms of playing higher, going man for man at the back and pressing them. That maybe led to some tiredness in their passing, which allowed us to get a break on them in our half.
“We had a couple of half-chances, but anything you get you have to take it. The little bit of quality was just missing as far as that’s concerned. We ran them to the last couple of minutes, so in one sense I’m very proud we got to this point against the best team in the country. They are a good team – and on 70 minutes they brought the cavalry on as well.”
Celtic get the result their performance deserved against brave Ross County
County certainly worked hard to try and stop Celtic from finding the gaps through their backline. But if they had taken anything from the contest today, you couldn’t seriously have said it would’ve been all that fair.
Celtic still bossed proceedings and had the vast majority of possession. Chances came and went for the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda, and Jota to name a few. It’s not as if County, despite all of their hard work, truly came close to getting a point.
Instead, Celtic were a class apart today. Nothing County did was good enough to halt the Hoops from breaking through them. Once again, a bit of profligacy on our part ensured the game was closer than it should’ve been.
Moving forward, Ange would undoubtedly like to see us put games to bed a touch earlier. For all of County’s hard work, it was truly down to Celtic with regards to when the game was over as a contest.
But at this stage of the season, all that matters is the 3 points. Celtic picked them up and are now within reach of the title, regardless of what happens against Rangers next weekend.
Best team in the country? That’s a tag the Hoops will be looking to confirm over the next 2 matches.
