Reported Celtic target Kasper Junker is chasing Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski for a top accolade.

The race for this season’s European Golden Shoe is hotting up. Currently, Bayern Munich star Lewandowski leads the race, with Messi, Ronaldo and Erling Haaland just behind. A surprise name, however, is Junker, who was linked with a move to Celtic in December [TEAMtalk].

It’s a relatively complicated system, but bear with me. Obviously, it’s easy to tally individual goals. However, a coefficient ranking system has an effect on the “value” of a goal. So, a player scoring in a Top 5 European league will earn more points-per-goal than a player from Norway or Scotland.

With that in mind, it’s not hard to see why Lewa, Ronaldo and Messi are topping this season’s charts. They boast 70, 46 and 46 points respectively [Futaa]. Junker isn’t far behind second place, with an impressive 40.5 points.

Lewandowski will no doubt take the honours, but it’s incredibly impressive that Junker is above Kylian Mbappé and Romelu Lukaku in the scoring charts.

These coefficient rules were in play when Henrik Larsson famously won the European Golden Boot, as it was known at the time. His ridiculous goal-scoring antics in 00-01 won him the honours. That puts into perspective how amazing his season really was, when you consider the stature of the SPL at the time.

If Kasper Junker is in conversations with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, Celtic ought to enquire

Long-term readers will remember that we were the first to suggest Celtic should move for Junker. At the time, the Dane had 25 goals in 24 games. When the Swedish league season finished, the Bodø/Glimt star had 27 in 25, with 11 assists [Transfermarkt].

His output has been, frankly, unrealistic.

At 27, Junker is a late-bloomer, but that hasn’t stopped clubs casting glances. Crystal Palace, Crotone, West Brom and Watford have all been reportedly interested in the Dane. Remarkably still uncapped at senior level, it feels inevitable that the Swedish top-flight goal machine will move to either the UK or mainland Europe before too long.

They say you should judge a person by the company they keep. If that’s true of Junker, Celtic should be trying to make a move happen.
