Scott Allan failed to make the Celtic reserve squad yesterday

There were many things to be excited about regarding the Celtic reserves yesterday, but Scott Allan wasn’t one of them.

The midfielder who signed a pre-contract deal with Hibs in January, wasn’t part of the match-day squad to face the Jambos reserves in Greenock yesterday.

In the end, Celtic would run out 3-2 winners. Karamoko Dembele grabbed the winner after Wallace Duffy and Marvin Compper got the others.

And as usual, there were some familiar faces in there. Compper continued his renaissance, whilst the likes of Vakoun Issouf Bayo, Dembele, and Jack Aitchison all lined up too.

But Allan wasn’t even in the squad at all, with no place for him on the bench. There’s been no news as of yet whether the frozen-out midfielder has picked up a knock, or whether it was just a tactical change.

Of course, this doesn’t matter to the Celtic first-team. Given Allan is off in the summer, there’s surely now no chance he features in the senior squad between now and the end of the season.

Allan’s making a fine contribution towards the reserves

But he has made a terrific contribution for the reserves recently. He had started the previous three reserve matches, and looked like playing a key role in their title run-in. The reserves currently sit at the top of the table, but just two points clear of Rangers with a game in-hand.

Allan has been a good figure to have in the squad for the younger players. He’s had experience at the likes of Hibernian, West Bromwich Albion, Rotherham, and Dundee United. Allan has certainly been around the block, and he can still make a positive contribution to the reserve squad before he departs.

So it was unusual to see him drop out with no injury reports.

Perhaps Tommy McIntyre, Celtic’s reserve coach, now feels the time is right to give the likes of Dembele a run in the team. If Allan has no chance of featuring in the first-team anymore, why not hand his spot to a youngster. That’s another potential train of thought.

But by all accounts, Allan has been performing well down in the reserve side. His deliveries have been terrific, and he’s been notching up the assists over the last few weeks.

Is this the last we’ve seen of him, however? Let us know if you think Allan will be back in the reserves at some stage before the end of the season?
