For the last year Scott Bain has had nothing but success. From his Celtic debut in a win at Ibrox, to signing a permanent deal with the club, to winning his first trophy as a player, it has been a dream year for the goalkeeper.

Now he has something new to contend with – disappointment. Bain was in goals for Scotland for their humiliating 3-0 loss to Kazakhstan on Thursday.

It must be said that Bain was not to blame for any of the goals conceded. However, it will be interesting to see how he responds to this setback. His response could define his season.

Bain seems certain to start for Scotland against San Marino on Sunday. Then he will be back for the Hoops against Rangers a week later.

Interim boss Neil Lennon will probably speak to all the Celtic players involved in the Scotland loss when they return from international duty.

Pay close attention to the player

But he should pay close attention to Bain. The other players have been used to poor results in big games over the years, Bain hasn’t. Hopefully the defeat won’t have affected the player going forward.

If, with Lennon’s help he can put Scotland’s loss to the back of his mind, Bain can have a good season for the Hoops going forward.

How he reacts to this setback may well define the player’s Celtic career.
