Scott Brown has accepted responsibility after turning in one of his worst Celtic performances in a long time in the 4-3 loss to Cluj.

The Hoops crashed out of the Champions League, and Brown was partly to blame after giving away a ludicrous penalty which brought the Romanian side right back into the game.

Brown took to social media after the game to apologise for his performance.

“If anyone should be getting a slagging or abuse it’s all on me tonight as didn’t perform. Sorry” he said, following the Hoops defeat.

It is good of Brown to take responsibility for the loss. However, that doesn’t take away from the fact he turned in one of his worst Celtic performances in years.

Perhaps he has an injury? He was taken off towards the end of the game and replaced by Vakoun Issouf Bayo. Celtic might have been going for goals at that stage. However, it was still a surprise that Brown was taken off.

Injury would be explanation for poor performance

An injury would explain why he was so poor against Cluj. There has to be concern that age is starting to catch up with Brown after what has been a wonderful career with Celtic.

However, he has been written off before, and he will be eager to prove the critics wrong once more. With that in mind, he should still be rested for the Hoops next game, in the Betfred Cup against Dunfermline.

He needs a break ahead of some big games in the next few weeks. A break could do Brown good especially if he has an injury.

Brown should be applauded for his apology after the game, it will be interesting to see if any of his team-mates follow in his footsteps.
