Scott Brown admits Celtic are badly missing Callum McGregor

Scott Brown has opened up and admitted that Celtic are badly missing Callum McGregor and his midfield influence.

The Hoops midfielder picked up an unfortunate injury in Valencia and has been sidelined ever since. McGregor has went on to miss matches at Hearts and Hibs, before also being ruled out of the home clash against Aberdeen.

Fortunately, interim manager Neil Lennon has confirmed that McGregor is close to a return. The Northern Irishman stated that he’s happy for him to go away with Scotland next week.

Nir Bitton has been deputising in his place, but he was too slow against Aberdeen on Saturday.

Brown wasn’t willing to criticise Bitton, but he did open up in the Evening Times about the importance of getting McGregor back.

“I think any player would miss having Callum in there. He has been exceptional for us over the last two or three seasons.

“His work rate is phenomenal and he just gives us so much in terms of being able to pick out a pass or score a few goals himself.

“He is a quality player and getting him back into the team should give everyone a bit of a lift.”

McGregor’s influence noticeable when he isn’t there

It’s easy to take a player like McGregor for granted. He does the hard yards and runs about so much for the team. But when he’s out and replaced by the slower Bitton, it’s easier to defend against for the opposition.

McGregor has, this season alone, managed to make 54 appearances for club and country. If he had stayed fit he would be a couple off 60 at this point. That’s a ridiculously sensational return for a player who gets about the pitch as often as McGregor.

This season, the midfield dynamo has six goals and 10 assists to his name at Parkhead. His contribution is invaluable, and when he’s injured it takes something substantial away from the Celtic midfield.

Here’s hoping the Scotland international can get himself back match-fit ahead of the Rangers game on March 31st. But if he’s preparing to go on international duty next week, it’s looking likely we’ll be fine in that regard.
