Scott Brown can’t resist ‘Penalty to Rangers’ dig at former Ibrox forward after hilarious Scotland mix-up

Scott Brown still finds time to do plenty of media work whilst in charge at Ayr United.

Now aged 40, the former Celtic captain is in his third managerial job since retiring from football in 2022, having also been in charge at Fleetwood Town in England.

As well as captaining the Hoops, Brown has also captained Scotland, being given the honour to lead out his country during Gordon Strachan’s time in charge of the national team.

And with the international break in full flow, the Tartan Army were in action last night, though they were without Celtic pair Kieran Tierney and Anthony Ralston after the duo pulled out due to fitness issues.

Scotland were in Denmark to face Kasper Schmeichel’s side, earning an impressive point in a goalless draw – and with Danish former Rangers man Peter Lovenkrands letting his words slip during the broadcast, Brown couldn’t resist a dig.

Lovenkrands is well-known for his time in Glasgow, during which he developed a unique hybrid Glaswegian accent – he returned to Ibrox in a coaching role in 2017.

Whilst on Scottish screens during the BBC’s half-time analysis, Lovenkrands couldn’t hide his club allegiance when he accidentally referred to Scotland as ‘Rangers.’

Hoops icon Brown didn’t forget about this when the panel were analysing an incident which saw Max Johnston subjected to a red card VAR check which was eventually turned away.

The Dane was weighing up the incident, saying, “I know you’ve got the Scottish tinted glasses on and I’m biased with Denmark the other way.

“But if that had been at the other end, you would’ve wanted that. It’s last man.”

Referring back to the first mix-up, Brown interjected: “At one point, you did shout ‘penalty Rangers… that’s what I was hearing!”

If shouting the words has the same effect for Scotland than they do for Rangers, Tartan Army fans might have to start using them too…

Celtic connections in action between Denmark and Scotland

As well as Schmeichel, there were plenty of other Celtic-connected figures in action in what was a fairly unentertaining encounter in Copenhagen.

It was revealed that Celtic had a private jet ready to bring Kasper Dolberg to Glasgow, but after the move wasn’t completed, the forward has now signed for Ajax – he also started the match at Parken.

On the Danish bench was Matt O’Riley, who himself completed a deadline day move, this one being from Brighton to Olympique Marseille on loan.

On the Scottish side, the winger now known as Ben Gannon Doak was controversially left on the bench, having gone from strength to strength since leaving the club as a teenager.
