Scott Brown chooses game that utterly broke Rangers as his greatest ever at Celtic

Scott Brown enjoyed some incredible occasions in a Celtic shirt and is one of the club’s most decorated players as a result.

That provides him with loads of contenders for a ‘greatest game’ as a Celtic player, but he’s managed to pick out one – a very satisfying away victory against Rangers at Ibrox.

Back in March 2018, Brendan Rodgers’ side had the chance to travel across the city and take a massive step towards a league title, but not everything went to plan on the day.

Celtic found themselves behind in the match on two occasions thanks to Josh Windass and Daniel Candeias but twice equalised before half-time with a Tom Rogic stunner and a sublime Moussa Dembele finish.

Then, in the second half, Jozo Simunovic was sent off by referee Willie Collum for an elbow on Alfredo Morelos.

An attacking substitution from Rodgers followed, who showed no fear in attempting to pin the home side back and push for a winner.

Odsonne Edouard was the super sub, scoring one of his best goals for Celtic with a beautiful curling finish in front of thousands of supporters at the Broomloan end, sparking jubilant scenes and an eventual 3-2 victory.

It’s the match that utterly broke Rangers, with the Ibrox side announcing just a couple of months later that they would be taking the step of drastically reducing Celtic’s derby allocation to below 1,000 – a petty step that endures to this day. Celtic fans have long suspected repeated victories for the Bhoys at the stadium were at the root of the decision, after fan petitions and the like.

Scott Brown on epic Celtic win over Rangers

Brown has chosen the fixture as his greatest game at Celtic, telling the official club channel Celtic TV: “I remember going to Ibrox knowing that if we won this game we would win the league. I remember watching the Scottish Cup draw beforehand as well, and I remember them cheering that they got us in the draw.

“It was sitting in the back of our head at the time. We were talking about it in the changing room. What we did really well was keeping everything in-house. We never really spoke about Rangers too much, we always spoke about ourselves.

“On the day when we were walking out, we saw 8,000 Celtic fans. It’s an amazing scene. It’s 8,000 fans going away from home. It’s a shame now nobody gets that because that feeling of having those fans there was exceptional.

“It’s a little bit devastating to go out and see what’s in the corner now. Take nothing away from the [current] lads, we still go there and still win games.”

Brown goes on to talk through all the big moments in the match on the video, from the goals to getting inside Morelos’ head and celebrating with supporters at full-time.

It’s a brilliant watch and worth checking out.
