Celtic captain Scott Brown has played for the Hoops in Europe for over a decade. However, it is unlikely that he will have experienced as many successful European campaigns as the current one.
Celtic’s 3-1 win over Rennes on Thursday night saw them clinch top spot in Europa League Group E with a game still to go.
That is a remarkable achievement of which Brown and his Celtic team-mates should be very proud. Brown took to social media earlier on Friday to give his verdict on the win and Celtic’s progress in Europe this season.
“Here we come”
“What a team performance last night and some great goals to finish off top of a hard table. Last 32 here we come” the Hoops skipper posted on his Instagram account.
Brown has played for some Celtic teams in Europe that have achieved good results in the past – the 3-2 win over Spartak Moscow, for example.
However, none of the teams he had played in managed to finish top of the group stage table in either the Champions League or the Europa League. Therefore, even as he comes to the end of his Celtic career, Brown is still helping Celtic make history.
Aim will be to help Hoops go on good run in tournament
His next aim will be to help the Hoops go on a decent run in the later stages of the Europa League. In three of the last four seasons the Hoops have been eliminated at the last 32 stage of the competition.
This year at least Celtic are seeded in the draw. That could give the Hoops a chance at what could be an ‘easier’ draw in the last 32.
Brown has won it all for Celtic domestically, but Europe hasn’t always been successful for the club. That is no fault of the player. However, in the last few seasons of his career, the player would no doubt want to reach the later stages of European competition. Hopefully he gets to do that this season.
