Scott Brown shared why he joined Celtic and snubbed Rangers, including Dermot Desmond’s actions

There aren’t or haven’t been any better characters out there than Celtic hero, Scott Brown.

For years and years, Brown caused havoc in the middle of the park for Celtic and made sure the opposition were in for a nightmare time and time again.

From that goal in the Glasgow derby and that celebration in front of El Hadji Diouf to even scoring for Aberdeen against Rangers at Ibrox towards the end of his career.

Brown was a constant nightmare for all and also played in one of Celtic’s most dominant periods of the club’s history.

But it could have been very different for the now-Ayr United boss when he initially left Hibernian and moved to Glasgow in 2007.

Rangers were keen on bringing in Brown’s talents and he even had a meeting with the club, but what made him pick Celtic?

A fresh-faced Brown had come through at Hibernian and those performances had caught the eye of Scotland’s top-two.

Brown stated that he met up with the late Walter Smith in 2007, alongside Ally McCoist and David Murray ‘in a car park in Sighthill’.

But, in contrast, when Celtic wanted him, Dermot Desmond ‘flew me down to London’ to the home of the club’s majority shareholder.

That impressed Brown, on top of then-manager Gordon Strachan wanting to ‘build the team around you’ and he then entered the Celtic doors, as he told LeMeBeFrank Podcast.

“I think I choose, alright, yeah,” said Brown. “I went and met Walter (Smith), Ally (McCoist) and David Murray in the car park in Sighthill in Glasgow. Underneath flats and sat in a Land Rover.

“Then, Celtic phoned to ask if I can speak to them. Hibs accepted, they flew me down the London, to Dermot (Desmond’s) place. I was like looking going, ‘slightly better than Sighthill this’.

“I got on really well with Coisty and Walter. Been at Scotland with Tam, at the time, so it was really good banter.

“But Tommy was like, ‘come on, wee man, you know. You know you want to come home. Come to us. We will make sure you are alright and we will build the team around you’.

“And I got on really well with Strachan and the way he wanted to play. He wanted to build the team around myself. Aiden (McGeady) and all the young players that were there. I just felt it was the right place at the right time to go to a club that was in the Champions League. That was competing all the time.”

Celtic fans are grateful and Brown himself will be very glad that he picked the right side of Glasgow because his journey was entertaining of the highest order.

From winding up the opposition to lifting Trebles in Celtic colours, Brown’s time at Parkhead will go down in the legendary books.
