Celtic talent Scott Robertson has revealed his recent dialogue with Ange Postecoglou as he looks to make a big impact this season.

Robertson is back nursing an injury after his loan spell with Crewe came to an end back in March. The Hoops midfielder has spent the last 2 campaigns trying to kick on via loan moves at Gillingham, Doncaster Rovers, and Crewe respectively.

The player is now into the final 12 months of his Celtic contract with an expiry date set for 2023 [Transfermarkt]. It remains to be seen if he’ll be offered a new deal, but it clearly remains his dream to still make it at Celtic Park.

And Robertson has been addressing the morale-boosting dialogue he’s been having with the manager as he looks ahead to next season.

As quoted by the Daily Record, the midfielder said: “The manager has been brilliant with me. When I returned to Lennoxtown after the surgery he was talking with me. Every step of the way he’s been checking in to make sure everything is going OK.

“He hasn’t really spoken much about football, it’s been all about my recovery, and that’s been great to hear as it’s encouraging going into the new season. With Nir Bitton and Tom Rogic leaving it has freed up a few spaces but everyone knows how well served Celtic are in midfield.

“We have strong depth in that area and no doubt other players will arrive. But that competition is something every Celtic player has to deal with. There are only so many starting positions available and it’s up to me to stake my own claim when we get back into training for the new campaign. It’s a challenge I’ll relish.”

Scott Robertson ready to start kicking on at Celtic after several loan spells

Robertson has become a more well-known face to supporters after making his debut for the club in a Europa League match against CFR Cluj in 2019. However, since then, he’s seldom been given much of an opportunity to add to that.

Indeed, Robertson remains on 1 single first-team appearance and has yet to feature since signing his new deal back in 2020.

It won’t be long until that’s up, and that poses an interesting question about his long-term future. Whether he’s done enough out on loan to impress Ange and start making matchday squads is only something that will be answered when the seaso begins.

But it’s a huge pre-season for the talented midfielder. Even with the departures of Tom Rogic and Nir Bitton, competition remains extremely fierce in the middle of the park. So much so that it’s still difficult to see Robertson playing regularly next season.

It could be the case that yet another loan move is on the table given how his spell with Crewe ended. But we’ll know a lot more after pre-season and how many opportunities Ange chooses to give him in Austria and afterward.

The manager taking a keen interest is a real positive for Scott of course. Now it’s time to see what he’s learned after being away for the past 18 months.
