Scott Robertson should be given improved Celtic contract

Last December, Celtic’s triumphant Europa League group stage campaign ended with a 2-0 loss to Cluj. The result didn’t matter, the Hoops had already won the group.

However, what was probably the most interesting part of the game was the fact that Hoops starlet Scott Robertson made his first-team debut for the team in Romania.

Robertson didn’t look out of place in the team, and performed very well on the night. The midfielder, who is just 18, played so well that it is a bit surprising that he hasn’t featured more often for the Hoops in the first-team squad this season.

Looks to have bright future in the game

However, he does look to have a player with a big future in the game – if he can handle a Europa League game at 18, then the future is certainly bright for Robertson.

The Hoops should recognise that by giving the player a new, improved contract. Robertson signed a deal with the club back in July, but that expires at the end of next season.

That is not long enough in the grand scheme of things. You don’t want the player to enter into the last year of his deal with only one year left.

Therefore, the player should be awarded his second contract in a year. That might seem a bit unprecedented, but then nothing is normal in football at the moment.

Loan move may benefit player

Now seems to be the ideal time to get a deal done with no football being played, and once the game has returned Celtic should arrange for the player to go on loan next season.

A move to another Premiership side would benefit Robertson, and he should be confident of performing well for any side that he should join next season.

After all, he performed well in the Europa League, so he should be able to perform well in the Scottish Premiership.

Should Celtic offer Robertson a new deal? Which club should he move to on loan, if any? Share your thoughts below with a comment in our new discussion forum…
