This weekend will be a historic one for the Scottish Premiership as clubs prepare for the introduction of VAR.

The new technology is being brought into place for the first time during Friday and Saturday’s six top-flight matches.

And as is expected with Scottish Football, all eyes are set to be on the VAR system and officials in charge of those games.

After all but one of the 42 SPFL clubs voted in favour of implementing Video Assistant Referees, extensive testing has been underway for the past three years ahead of its long-awaited arrival [SFA].

Whilst the technologies introduction is a much-needed step in the right direction, there are still plenty of questions being asked surrounding what VAR will look like in the Scottish game.

In an attempt to answer some of those questions, the Scottish FA has released a video showcasing how the system will work when it comes to the officiating of each game.

Alongside the video, an extensive Question and Answer article on the SFA website has also been put out online and on social media for supporters.

The article responds to 23 key questions that fans from across the country may have regarding VAR, including the protocol that referees will be working under and the sort of decisions that will be reviewed by at least six cameras in each stadium.

Other key points made in the SFA’s report include how far back VAR can go back to check a decision or how checks/reviews will be communicated to those inside the stadium, plus much more.

I thoroughly recommend any Celtic or Scottish Football supporter checks out this information, with a number of key points to take in ahead of its introduction this weekend.

Historic weekend for Scottish Football as officiating prepares to take a step forward.

Whether you agree with how VAR is used, I think it is fair to say that this step to introduce the technology should be a much-needed one in the right direction.

Referees have been a major talking point in this country for as long as anyone can remember, with dodgy decisions being questioned on a weekly basis.

By introducing this system, officials in this country now have little to no excuses. All the key decisions in games must be right, and they have the technology to make sure that is the case now.

It should certainly be interesting to see how VAR is utilised, starting with the Hoops trip to Tynecastle on Saturday.

Personally, I think I will be having a few more reads of this article produced by the SFA in order to understand all the ins and outs of VAR going forward, as from here, the technology is here to stay.
