We continue our season review of Celtic in 2018/19 with a look at the club’s number 24, Dorus de Vries.
Dorus de Vries had a largely uneventful three years at Celtic. He was signed by Brendan Rodgers to challenge Craig Gordon in the Hoops side.
But after a handful of appearances in his first season, he has rarely featured since for the Hoops.
Few appearances made
Indeed, in his three season with the Bhoys he made only 15 appearances for the Hoops. He didn’t make a single appearance last season.
Interestingly enough, he was featured on the bench quite regularly as back-up to Craig Gordon. Despite that, he never got on the pitch.
Time is right to leave
Now he is set to leave the club as his contract has come to an end. The time is right for the player to depart the Hoops. He has rarely if ever going to feature for the first-team. Indeed, he would have remained third-choice goalkeeper if he signed a new deal.
As de Vries comes to the end of his career, he will want to play on a regular basis. That was never going to happen at Celtic after a poor first season at the club.
It will be interesting to see where de Vries ends up next. He could still have a few years in him as a goalkeeper. One thing is for sure though, it won’t be at Celtic.
