Setback has come at worst possible time for Celtic’s Mikey Johnston

Celtic attacker Mikey Johnston should be reflecting on one of the best weeks of his footballing career. His assist to Odsonne Edouard helped to give Celtic the lead in the recent Glasgow derby.

The winger turned in a very mature display in Celtic’s 2-0 victory. Unfortunately though, he has picked up an injury, and has had to pull out of Scotland’s under-21 squad.

There is no indication yet as to how severe the injury is. However, there has to be a doubt that he will be fit for Celtic’s next league game against Hamilton next Saturday.

It has to be said that the injury has come at the worst possible time for Johnston. The Hoops have a lot of big games coming up.

Could miss some big games

That includes the start of the Europa League group stages. Johnston will not want to miss out on that. There is also the danger that Johnston might find it difficult to regain his place in the team if he is out for a while.

That would be harsh on the player, who has been in excellent form for the Hoops. But that could be the outcome of the injury.

Johnston’s absence could lead to a Hoops debut for recent signing Mohamed Elyounoussi. Should he hit the ground running, it could be difficult for Johnston to get back into the team.

However, Neil Lennon is a fan of the player. He may well select Johnston in the first-team when he returns to full fitness.

It will be interesting to find out the extent of Johnston’s injury. For his sake, hopefully it is not a serious one, and he is back in action soon.

Even if he is declared fit in time to play Hamilton, it might be a bit of a gamble to play him on their artificial pitch. Hopefully Johnston returns to first-team action soon.
