Shamrock Rovers centre-back Liam Scales discusses transfer speculation after Celtic link
Shamrock Rovers centre-back Liam Scales has been discussing recent transfer interest in him, with Celtic apparently firmly interested.
Scales was first linked with the Hoops last week. It had been reported by the Irish Mirror that Celtic had submitted an offer for the defender.
Celtic still need another centre-back despite securing the services of Carl Starfelt from Rubin Kazan last month. However, Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen Bradley stated last week that there was also Premier League interest in Scales [Irish Times].
And the 23-year-old has admitted that he’s likely to leave Shamrock come the end of the transfer saga.
As quoted by the Irish Mirror when asked whether he would be off in the near future, Scales said: “I’m not sure but I’d say so. Anything can happen. There’s interest and that’s public. I’m weighing up my options and taking my time. Until I make that decision I’m a Rovers player.
“I plan on performing well week in, week out as long as I’m here and until anything comes of that. But I’m just focusing on my performance. I have to work hard to stay in the team but the interest is flattering, of course it is. But I don’t want it to be a distraction.
“I had it at UCD in the past (when he was close to joining Bristol Rovers) and it affected my performance. So if there is any news, we’ll talk about it then.”
Liam Scales to Celtic not the done deal it looked like being
Scales looked like being a cert to move to Celtic Park only a week ago. Even the Irish Mirror stated that it looked likely a deal would go through if the Hoops wanted it enough.
As of yet, the situation doesn’t seem to have progressed whatsoever. There doesn’t seem to be much of an urgency to get this one done, despite the reports last week.
If Celtic want to nab Scales, they would be as well moving quickly. The last thing we need is Premier League interest developing into concrete offers. That’s when it becomes difficult for the Hoops to compete in financial terms.
Then again, this can only be a goer if Ange Postecoglou wants to bring Scales to the club. It could easily be the case that the Greek-Australian has other targets in mind.
It’s promising to see Celtic still being linked with centre-backs in any case. Even though we now have four options, one of them – Nir Bitton – simply isn’t good enough. We need a replacement for Nir as soon as possible, and allow him to become cover for the midfield which he always should’ve been.
But whether that man is Scales is still up in the air.
