Shaun Maloney to Celtic makes total sense; many fans are into it too
Unsurprisingly, the Hoops supporters are all for the Shaun Maloney to Celtic discussion that kicked off last night.
The Daily Record reported that the club’s outgoing Chief Executive, Peter Lawwell, has held talks with Maloney about a potential role in the set-up next season. Maloney is currently working under Roberto Martinez as a Belgium first-team coach.
The former Celtic winger is said to have asked for more time to focus on this summer’s Euro 2020 competition. However, the Hoops are hoping to lure him with the prospect of helping build a new culture at the football club.
Belgium boss Martinez once described Maloney as having an “elite brain”. He would also claim that Shaun was extremely detailed, a natural on the training gound, and that he had a kind feeling for all players [Scottish Sun].
So much so that the Record believes, should Martinez take over at Barcelona this summer, he would want to take Maloney with him.
Shaun Maloney could easily be a Director of Football candidate for Celtic
It’s unclear as to what the role is that Celtic would like Maloney to take on. Whether it would be more of a coaching capacity or working more on recruitment. If it’s the latter, it wouldn’t surprise you one bit if he was a candidate for the vacant Director of Football position.
That’s just speculation of course. It wouldn’t be surprising if that was the case, but there are no reports to back it up as of yet. Whether Maloney would feel more suited to a coaching role as opposed to an upstairs one is also up for debate.
The only major question mark you would have if Maloney was involved in the recruitment side of things would be his track record. Or his lack of one I should say. Maloney has worked with Martinez to identify the right players for their Belgium squads. But he’s never worked on recruitment at club level. His role with Belgium is his first coaching role in senior football.
This could easily be a move from Celtic to try and get a “Celtic mind” on board for the new regime. Granted, whether Maloney would want to work alongside Ange Postecoglou remains to be seen. As a Celtic fan, he may have reservations about it.
Regardless, despite the many questions that have still to be answered, it’s a report Celtic fans have been left excited about. Reacting on Twitter to the news, Hoops supporters said the following:
If this genuinely happened then I'm on board, I wanted Maloney in as head coach, he's been at the best international team for few years now and will have learnt alot. If @dom_mckay1 does this then I'll forgive him a bit😂🙏 https://t.co/gjyfMppZ0O

The first rumour I’ve actually been a bit excited about post-Howe. Obviously not as manager, but having Maloney back at the club in some capacity would be a good start to this rebuild. https://t.co/azRZmOJOh4

Honestly if Ange Comes in and stays at Celtic and rebuilds us with Shaun Maloney by his side and wins us a couple leagues and domestic trophies and leaves and then hands off the club to Maloney to move up to number 1 I’m absolutely fine with that. Boys a future Celtic number 1
