Former Celtic midfielder Shaun Maloney’s quick-fire return to Scottish Football is off after talks with recently relegated Premiership side Dundee collapsed, BBC Scotland have reported.

The 39-year old has been out of work for around two months since his surprise departure from Hibernian towards the end of the season.

Many Scottish Football fans felt that Maloney wasn’t given enough time with the Easter Road side, spending just four months in the dugout.

Despite the disappointment of his time in the capital, reports suggested that Maloney could have been set for a swift return to Scottish Football with Dundee. The Dens Park side held talks with the former Celtic youth coach.

He was said to be close to linking up with his ex-manager Gordon Strachan, who is Technical Director with the Dark Blues and currently leading the search for their next boss.

However, that move has taken another twist, with talks breaking down between both parties over ‘a number’ of issues. Dundee are now beginning their search for alternative candidates, according to BBC Scotland.

Shaun Maloney still set for return to coaching in some capacity

Maloney has also been linked with another coaching role in recent weeks, this time south of the border.

Before his short spell at Hibs, Maloney was very highly rated in the game after spending an extended period within the Belgian National team set-up alongside Roberto Martinez.

As a young coach, Maloney still has plenty of time to build up his reputation as a manager after the harsh dealings he suffered at Easter Road.

Pundits and fans were a little surprised that his next role would be coming at Dundee, who will face a rebuild this summer as they prepare for life in the Championship once again.

So, Maloney now has some time to consider his options before deciding whether it would be best to step into the dugout as manager again or have a spell as an assistant with Kompany at Burnley.
