Celtic could make a real statement of intent this summer and hand Odsonne Edouard the number seven jersey.

The Frenchman has had a blockbuster first year in the Hoops since moving from PSG in a record-breaking deal last summer. He scored 23 goals in 39 starts including notable strikes against Rangers, Dundee and in Saturday’s Scottish Cup final.

Edouard has worn the number 22 shirt for each of his two seasons at the club but now may be the time to give him a new number.

The pros

Giving him the number seven jersey would signal our intent to make him our main man. Of course, he will be our number one striker going into next season but it would still be nice to see the club show some faith.

Edouard would automatically become a bigger deal among the support if he was to wear the famous shirt. Shop sales would go through the roof and he would most likely be the best selling name on the back.

Edouard is the kind of guy who thrives when faith has been shown in him. He may turn into double the player.

The cons

Some may argue that the number won’t mean much to someone like Edouard. The Frenchman is unlikely to have grown up watching DVDs of Henrik Larsson or Jimmy Johnstone and he may not realise what all the fuss is about.

On the flip side, a change in number could add unwanted stress to a 21-year-old kid. It may be best just to leave him to get on with what he’s best at: scoring goals.
