Should Celtic have let Lee Congerton go to a bidding rival?

Brendan Rodgers looks like he’s about to deal Celtic another hammer blow by signing a player from under our noses. The Daily Record have reported that the Northern Irishman and Leicester are poised to sign Luton Town defender James Justin.

Celtic were interested in the highly rated 21-year-old and saw him as a replacement for Mikael Lustig but now it looks like the English Premier League side are going to get their man.

It seems coincidental that the Foxes should be interested in a Celtic target so soon after our former Head of Recruitment moved there.

Lee Congerton departed Glasgow for Leicester in May as he joined back up with Rodgers. Justin’s potential move to the Midlands poses questions about him and some other Celtic targets this summer.

An own goal

Congerton didn’t seem to be the most productive Head of Recruitment, from the outside at least. The majority of the targets he chased in his time at Celtic were English based. It would seem to fit with his character to go after some of the same names at his new club.

That wouldn’t bode well for Celtic. If Leicester City want the same player that we do then we simply don’t stand a chance. The Foxes have the lure of the English Premier League and far greater finances for both transfer fees and wages.

The majority of Celtic’s transfer targets so far this summer have been based in England. That market is well known to be overpriced and it certainly doesn’t offer us the best value. We’d be much better set looking abroad to the likes of Belgium and Holland where we’ve had success in the past.

Allowing Congerton to take part in recruitment meetings for this summer and then letting him go to a potential bidding rival seems like a big own goal from the club.
