‘Shut up’ – Adam Idah comes out fighting as he explains his actions on Republic of Ireland duty

Adam Idah was one of many Celtic stars who enjoyed a healthy international break.

The 24-year-old helped the Republic of Ireland beat Bulgaria 2-1 in Dublin on Sunday to maintain their UEFA Nations League B status after a 4-2 aggregate victory.

In the first leg, which was played in Plovdiv, the Irish won 2-1, but Idah was an unused substitute by his manager, Heimir Hallgrímsson.

So, you can understand that the Celtic striker was fired up when he came onto the field for the second leg and earned himself around half an hour of football.

Idah didn’t just make up the numbers, but he netted a brilliant winner and took his goalscoring tally on the international stage to five strikes.

And it seems as though he had a point to prove.

Adam Idah shuts up critics after scoring for the Republic of Ireland

It has been an interesting season for Idah because his form has dipped throughout the campaign and he is aware of the criticism he has faced.

The former Norwich City man stated that he saw, ‘a lot of stuff online’, and his shushing celebration after scoring for Ireland, was to just simply ‘tell people to shut up’, as posted by BBC Sport.

But Idah has taken that ‘frustration’ and channelled it in the best way possible.

“I saw a lot of stuff online, so it was just telling people to shut up, really,” said Idah about his celebration.

“I’ve got over it, I see it all the time and it’s exactly what I did tonight. That’s how you shush them, you let your feet do the talking.

“Obviously, I was frustrated with the first game, but I came on today and did what I’ve been doing all season, so it was just to the people who were doubting me.”

After a successful loan spell, which included that winner against Rangers in the Scottish Cup final, Celtic paid big money for Idah in the summer.

He wasn’t a regular at Norwich, so coming into an environment like Celtic and stepping up a few levels seems to have done him the world of good.

Idah admitted that someone like Brendan Rodgers has played a huge part in making ‘me love football again’.

“Ever since I’ve been at Celtic, Brendan Rodgers has been unbelievable for me,” stated Idah.

“It was a fresh start, he made me love football again, he had a lot of faith in me and I’m sure you can see that on the pitch.

“Whenever I play, I play with freedom now and I have scored a lot of goals. It’s the most I’ve scored in a season in my career and I think that’s due to the fact that I’ve had a fresh start at Celtic and the players there, the staff and fans, have all shown belief in me and it’s been great.”
